Our story begins with a live news report on the
air on location
at SECTION 13 the underground police station in
San Francisco where one
of the turtles Donatello will be honored with
the INVENTOR OF THE YEAR
AWARD for one of his inventions. World News Network
reporter Carmen
Sandiego "From the animated Where On Earth
Is Carmen Sandiego?" is
interviewing other inventors at SECTION 13...
CARMEN SANDIEGO
I'm here at the Imagination Institute at Section
13 where
Donatello will soon be receiving the prestigious
INVENTOR OF THE YEAR
AWARD. But with me now is another inventor here
at the Institute, Lara
Croft aka the Tomb Raider who's working here under
a Kodak scholarship.
Then she spots the famous archaeologist from both
the videogame
series and new movie and calls to her.
CARMEN SANDIEGO
Lara, thanks for talking with us.
LARA CROFT
Oh, my pleasure.
CARMEN SANDIEGO
Now, we all know that Kodak is a supporter of
the INVENTOR OF
THE YEAR AWARD, but I didn't know or realize they
do research here as
well.
LARA CROFT
Oh yeah, and we're doing some real cutting edge
stuff too.
CARMEN SANDIEGO
Like what? <Curious>
LARA CROFT
Like, um...like this.
She points to her wrist where a familiar wristwatch
rests but
this is no ordinary watch.
CARMEN SANDIEGO
A watch?
LARA CROFT <Frowns, looks annoyed>
What do you mean a watch? This is not just some
plain ordinary
watch. It's also a camera. Check this out. <Punches
some controls>
The watch-camera makes clicking sounds...
CARMEN SANDIEGO
Ah, what did it do?
LARA CROFT
It activated a highly photosensitive semiconductor
that
converted your image into digital information.
CARMEN SANDIEGO <Confused>
Which in English means?
LARA CROFT
It...just took your picture. C'mon, I'll show
you.
CARMEN SANDIEGO
Teriffic, this ought to be good.
The two women walk over to a computer terminal
consisting of
keyboard, monitor, etc. The Tomb Raider begins
inputting data onto the
screen and within seconds a collection of pics
(Another name for
pictures) appears on-screen.
CARMEN SANDIEGO
What's happening now?
LARA CROFT
We're downloading. <A bad photo appears on-screen>
Wow, what
have we here? <Tries not to laugh> That's
brutal. We'll save that one
for your driver's license.
CARMEN SANDIEGO
Ha! <Glares> Not funny.
LARA CROFT
Just kidding...<Grins weakly> Ah, let's
go through them again.
Once more the Tomb Raider downloads the menu screen
of pics
again and scrolls through each photo until she
finds one she likes.
LARA CROFT
OK, hold that frame. Much better, don't you think?
CARMEN SANDIEGO
Yeah. In fact I like that one too.
LARA CROFT
OK. Now that we have your picture, we can take
it further.
<Image changes colors several times, and the
hair falls out> Great
Scott, maybe a bit too far. Let's try something
else. <Image returns to
origional state> If you could have any artist
paint your portrait, who
would it be?
CARMEN SANDIEGO
Oh, ah...Michaelangelo.
LARA CROFT
Oh? I had no idea he was an artist, I thought
he was a Ninja
Turtle. Oh well, the heck with it anyway...good
choice.
So she selects Michaelangelo from a series of
pull down menus.
LARA CROFT
Grab one and two. Make one a background. Add brushstroke
filter number two. Sharpen resolution. Now crop
it.
CARMEN SANDIEGO
Cute. <She almost giggled>
Minutes later the final result emerges from the
printer.
LARA CROFT
And ta-tah! Your own masterpiece. It's that simple.
CARMEN SANDIEGO
That's amazing.
LARA CROFT
And you can transmit this image instantly to anyone
around the
world, or make as many copies as you'd like.
CARMEN SANDIEGO
In that case, I'll take 20 wallet sized.
LARA CROFT
You got yourself a deal.
CARMEN SANDIEGO
Thanks Tomb Raider, and next year they might honor
you as
INVENTOR OF THE YEAR.
LARA CROFT
Thank you Carmen.
Then SanDiego turns back to face the camera...
CARMEN SANDIEGO
In the meantime, we'll be right back with more
from the
Imagination Institute after these commercials.
After a brief delay, and a few commercials, the
WNN uplink is
restored, and SanDiego continues her on the air
report.
CARMEN SANDIEGO
We're back, live from Section 13. At the moment,
we are trying
to track down the chairman of the Institute, and
host of today's
festivities, Captain Black. <She spots the
captain> Oh, there he is.
<Calls to him> Mr. Black!
The bald-headed, police officer turns towards
SanDiego, smiles
when he recognizes his former high school girlfriend.
CAPTAIN BLACK
Oh, hello Carmen. Welcome. <Turns to camera>
Welcome to Section
13 and the Imagination Institute. Or as we like
to say around here, we
don't know anything.
He is interrupted by pile of boxes falling over
behind him and
scolds his workers.
CAPTAIN BLACK
Hey! Be careful with those.
CARMEN SANDIEGO
Ah, he-he. What do you mean, you don't know anything?
CAPTAIN BLACK
Oh, ah, that cannot be imagined. Our slogan: We
don't know
anything that can't be imagined.
CARMEN SANDIEGO
I see. Ah, Captain, the activities of this Institute
are
normally kept under lock and key. Can you tell
us why your top secret
doors are open today?
CAPTAIN BLACK
Oh, well, each year in the New Millenium we invite
the public in
to help us pay tribute to the world's leading
inventors, thinkers and
dreamers with <Holds up trophy> the INVENTOR
OF THE YEAR AWARD 2001.
CARMEN SANDIEGO
And this year's recipient is Donatello?
CAPTAIN BLACK
A truly remarkable genius, ninja turtle who can
fix any broken
item, repair it as good as new again or create
new inventions. As
Albert Einstein once said, imagination is more
important than knowledge.
CARMEN SANDIEGO
Yes, but didn't an invention of his accidentally
shrink the
other 3 turtles, Ninjara, Jackie Chan and Jade?
CAPTAIN BLACK <Looks suprised>
Well...<Tries covering up>
CARMEN SANDIEGO <Continues>
And didn't he also loose Leonardo, Michaelangelo,
Raphael,
Ninjara, Jade & Chan in the backyard of Chan's
uncle's pawnshop?
CAPTAIN BLACK
That really isn't quite the way it...
However SanDiego continues reminding her former
boyfriend of
more accidents Donatello caused long ago. The
evidence is revealed by
the FRONT PAGES of newspapers she holds up in
front of the camera lens
to zoom in on the stories.
CARMEN SANDIEGO
And didn't Donatello accidentally enlarge Ninjara?
CAPTAIN BLACK
Now, the media blew that out of proportion...
CARMEN SANDIEGO
Who nearly destroyed San Francisco?
The next FRONT PAGE photo on another newspaper
SanDiego shows
for the camera is that of the lady fox samauri
about 10-feet tall like
KING KONG or GODZILLA towering over the skyline
of San Francisco.
Quickly Black grabs the papers from Carmen and
stuffs them into a
shredder machine that chews up the evidence into
shreds. Then hoping to
cover up what happened long ago he changes the
subject.
CAPTAIN BLACK
Er, um. Sorry...And your, ah, your question is
what?
CARMEN SANDIEGO
Well, considering the accidents in Donatello's
past, are your
guests really safe today?
CAPTAIN BLACK
He-he, Carmen my dear. The Imagination Institute
at Section 13
is the safest place in the world. <Machine
in background sparks, causing
static on the screen. The captain grabs safety
mask from nearby
technician> Uh, as you can see, we ah, always
insist on wearing
industrial density, heavy duty safety goggles
around all new inventions.
And for our visitors, offer these. <Holds up
another pair of 3D
goggles> They will protect you from flying
debris which can occur at
anytime during a demostration.
SanDiego becomes shocked, alarmed by what he just
said.
CARMEN SANDIEGO
Excuse me sir. Did you say flying debris?
CAPTAIN BLACK
Oh, did I? <Now he looks suprised> Ah, well,
gosh. I'd love to
stay and chit-chat with you for hours, but unfortunately,
I can just see
one of my assistants is, ah, is calling me over...over
there, ah. I'll
see you later Carmen, asta-la-vista-baby...I'll
be back.
Then he hurries away while Carmen watches him
leave. Now the
machine in the background bursts into fire with
technicians running for
cover, others attempt to put out the blaze with
extinquishers as it
starts to overload.
CARMEN SANDIEGO
Well there you have it. Today all eyes will be
on Donatello as
he demostrates his new and...<Static>...er
machi...<Static>...ventor Of
The Year Awards Ceremo...
Then the signal goes off-line. With that, the
doors to Section
13 are opened, and those guests who remain in
the lobby are invited into
the auditorium. But were the events shown on WNN
an isolated incident,
or were they foreshadowing the flow of events
to come?
