4Kids to unveil Turtles movie in Cannes

NEWS BRIEF: US distributor 4Kids Entertainment will be at Mipcom with its 90-minute telemovie Turtles Forever, which “captures the unique irreverence and panache” of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

The show’s producer and director Lloyd Goldfine worked closely with the company behind the Turtles, Mirage Studios, and co-creator Peter Laird, to incorporate the three versions of the Turtles, from the 1980s, the 1990s and their current look.

****Turtles In Time Re-Shelled Premium Theme up for download on Xbox360. ( Click for Preview )****

GGM’s Mike – Sama :: Today on Xbox360 Ubisoft released the Turtles in Time Re-Shelled Premium theme for download. The theme is the Big Apple 3am construction site with giant Android Krang climbing in the background. At the top of the theme is the Turtles in Time Re-Shelled logo with Raph and Mike on the left of the logo and Leo and Don to the right of the logo. Underneath the logo is the cityscape. I have to say it is one of the best themes I have seen on the system. It’s even better for me since I have a Turtles gamertag (as if you guys didn’t know). I hope this means that Gamer Pictures are not far behind. The theme will cost you 240 microsoft points and is well worth it. Cowabunga!

"MAGGOT MAN" design by S.R. Bisstette (( 1989 )) [[ Courtesy of SRB ]]

Hey, look what I found this weekend! This is a blast from my checkered past, a 20-year-old monster movie design for a movie that was never made.
Back in early August, TMNT fan, Myrant reader and artist in his own right tOkKa wrote my old Mirage Studios friend Ryan Brown, asking about one of the many snapping turtle monster designs I’ve posted on Myrant this year.
Ryan recalled, “My memory is sketchy about this but… The proposed film Steve mentions was by my friend Jon Killough (Skinned Alive, 1990; Robot Ninja, 1989; The Dead Next Door, 1989)…”

Ryan continued, “I was asked by Jon to create a mutant leech monster for the never-produced flick and I mentioned to Jon that I might be able to get Steve Bissette to design for the film.”
Ryan indeed got a design sketch or two from me — and it’s the best of ‘em I’ve put on sale here today.
Ryan adds, “Jon had worked on The Dead Next Door (1989) and was proceeding with new film projects with his friend J.R. Bookwalter. In mid-1985 Sam Raimi put up some money for Jon’s 19-year-old friend J.R. Bookwalter to film The Dead Next Door. Bookwalter shot the film in Akron, Ohio during the summer of 1986 with area residents playing zombies. Fangoria wrote about the film in the March, 1987 issue. Jon was involved heavily with this film.”

But Maggot Man was never made, to the best of Ryan’s and my knowledge.
Thanks to tOkKa’s email, though, I got to thinking about that project and just this past Sunday turned up this wormboy. Thanks, tOkKa and Ryan, for reminding me of that which was long forgotten!
Just to be clear, my Maggot Man sketch is what’s for sale here; I’ve included a scan from the photocopy I kept of Ryan’s sketch for historical purposes only (I am not selling Ryan’s artwork, folks).
This uber-rare Maggot Man sketch is huge — the original measures 14″ x 22″, drawn with black pen and marker, some pencil underdrawing is visible; it’s on 2-ply board that is slightly discolored with age around the edges with a very minor 1/4″ tear at the bottom, center. This is vintage work, and goes for $135 plus shipping — first to email me at msbissette@yahoo.com can forever gaze upon this maggot, man.
Per usual, first Myrant price is forever the best price — in a day or two, I’ll be taking this off its Myrant debut slot and moving it to the sketchstore archives and Comic Art Fans Gallery at a higher price.

**2009 sketches and much vintage art can be snapped up 24 hours a day in the Sketch Store section (click this link), which offers a monstrous menagerie of still-for-sale Bissette sketches — Swamp Thing, Godzilla, Tyrant, Constantine, Vermonsters and many published original art rarities — for your pleasure.

***All 2009 sketches, sold and unsold, are archived in the Sketch Gallery, free viewing at all times, enjoy the show. “– SRB

“The Creator’s Bill of Rights” (( 1988 – ))

Clipped from an article regarding this historic event from Scott McCloud ::

Drawn group shot of the Summit participants from Reinventing Comics, Chapter Two. Left to Right: Ken Mitchroney, Mark Martin, Michael Dooney, Steve Lavigne, Peter Laird (sitting), Kevin Eastman, Ryan Brown, Michael Zulli, Richard Pini, Me { Scott McCloud } , Larry Marder, Dave Sim, Rick Veitch, and Steve Bissette. Not pictured: Eric Talbot and Gerhard (one of whom probably took the photo, but I can't remember).

Drawn group shot of the Summit participants from Reinventing Comics.

“The Creator’s Bill of Rights was written in November 1988 for a two day “Summit” of comic book artists held in Northampton, Massachusetts. The meeting had been suggested by Cerebus creator Dave Sim and hosted by local heroes Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, creators of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The Summit was a follow-up to a July meeting in Toronto which produced a “Creative Manifesto.” Some of us found the Manifesto a bit scattered, so I wrote a rough draft of a proposed replacement. That replacement, “A Bill of Rights for Comics Creators” was accepted quickly at Sim’s suggestion. The rest of that day was a non-stop argument about the document’s wording.

The Bill never generated much noise in the industry and I wouldn’t want to exaggerate its influence, but it provides an interesting snapshot of our attitudes at the time, and of the climate that was fueling self-publishers, progressive business people, and artists trying to reinvent the comics industry. A few years later, several top-selling Marvel artists would break from the pack and form a new company called Image, shifting the debate from rights and principles to clout and competition, but both developments would share a common premise, still relevant today: that comics creators already have the right to control their art if they want it; all they have to do is not sign it away.
"The Creator's Bill of Rights" (( 1988 - ))

I was invited in large part because I knew Laird and others through an APA I’d created called The Frying Pan. At my suggestion, Beanworld creator and “Nexus of all Comic Book Realities” Larry Marder was invited too. Larry flew out from Chicago to our place in Arlington, Massachusetts shortly before the meeting. I had the rough draft of the Bill ready but not typed yet. I vividly remember hammering it out on my old manual typewriter as Larry read my notes back to me, right before we rushed out the door to catch a succession of buses and trains to Northampton.

While waiting for the bus in Springfield, we found a copy shop and photocopied my hastily typed hand-out. It was also on that trip that I showed Larry my notes for a comic book about comics that I had been working on for a few years.

After the first day of debates, everyone stumbled out of the Hotel Northhampton into the cold New England air to walk the five or so blocks to dinner. I remember Larry and I lagged behind a little. I had argued with Dave Sim about every imaginable issue that day as if my life depended on it, but walking to dinner, it all seemed pretty distant already. Larry and I talked more about my notes for the comic book about comics. I asked him if he thought those ideas would mean a lot more in the long run than anything I could accomplish in Northampton. He said yeah, they probably would.

When those notes became **Understanding Comics it was Kevin Eastman’s money that paid me to finish it – money he and Peter had earned because they refused to give away their creation the way so many artists had before them.” — ***Scott McCloud

☻ ☺

This is an   important piece of  Mirage Studios/ TMNT history  and  may prove useful to any and all those thinking of entering into comics or are already stumbling / succeeding their  way through the sequential art fields. Kevin and Peter were high backers of this at the time.
