‘Mirage Universe’ TMNT sourcebook cover by Laird

According to Peter Laird’s blog, Mirage is working on a sourcebook of all the characters who have appeared in the series, and he’s drawing the cover!

We’re planning a “Mirage Universe” book, which — as I understand it — will be a kind of reference work for all of the characters which have appeared in the Mirage Turtles comics. I volunteered to draw the cover, which I decided to do as a “flip cover”. Here’s my drawing, which I did in “photo blue” pencil.

No details on when it will be released, but Pete says he’ll have images of the finished inks soon.

TMNT 25 , CRT/tanaka Interactive **

Danny B. ::

With approximately two months remaining until the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles kick off their 25th year in 2009, Mirage Studios and licensing agent 4Kids Entertainment have added two new partners to its TMNT Shell-ebration family. CRT/tanaka Interactive and Kicking Cow Promotions Inc. have come on board to enhance the multi-dimensional plans for 2009, building and executing the TMNT mobile tour and the fan-based www.tmnt25.com web site respectively.

Kazoo With the TMNT

“In the near-25 year history of the TMNT, there have been a lot of high points and a good fair share of low points. A lot of awesome merchandise and some… not so much. “Kazoo with [the] TMNT” would fit into that last category. Or, perhaps even more accurately, into the, “We’re willing to approve anything you’ll give us money for,” category.

Before I go any further I should put forth the disclaimer that I absolutely love the entire musical history of the TMNT. Seriously. Even the stuff that’s cheesy as hell is, at worst, a guilty pleasure for me. Even though my sincerity behind any positive words for “Kazoo with [the] TMNT” would be weak, I couldn’t deny that it fills me full of giddy laughter.

Here’s the premise of “Kazoo with [the] TMNT”:
You get a book with very basic sheet music for eight songs from the soundtrack of the first live action movie. You also get four kazoos (bonus points if you can guess the colors of the kazoos). You are meant to kazoo the sheet music. Ok, sure. Why not? Kids like kazoos and Ninja Turtles, it can’t be that bad. Right?

Wrong. This perfectly innocent package becomes the stuff of legend with the inclusion of a simple cassette tape. A cassette tape that features all of the songs in the book played by an electronic orchestra and… someone playing the kazoo!! This may be the only example in history of a dedicated kazoo recording. And there’s a reason for that.

It’s just hard to take the kazoo seriously as a solo instrument. The novelty of it wears off in about 10 seconds, but here it supports eight songs that are 3-5 minutes long. It also, by design, produces a lot of spit, and the producers of this product really didn’t make any effort to try to hide that. But then again, did the producers of this product really think they were releasing something stellar? Nah, it was all for the quick buck.

** To experience “Kazoo with [the] TMNT” for yourself, you can download the contents of the cassette tape, for a limited time, here. ”

Beautifully eerie TMNT sculpture

Sculpture by Alex CF

This sculpture by artist Alex CF is truly amazing…

Alex says:

Ok, so for those of you who dont know, i have a weird obsession with the ninja turtles. anyway, here is a Leonardo i made. I’m enjoying making these small statues, and work more on fine detail. Originally the turtles all had red head bands – the cartoon changed this so they could make more money from multiple toys.
For now, here is an angry turtle. based in part on the Michael zulli ninja turtles, normal project up next week.

Also, Alex has many other sculptures on display at his website, along with illustration and other works of art. There are things like Roswell aliens and cabinets of curiosities filled with crazy fabled creatures!

Here’s a testimonial I came across that, to me, accurately describes Alex’s work:

I begin with the work of a fine and decidedly insane Master of the Macabre, the artist Alex cf. He has created many impressive artworks that illustrate the darker side of  the Neo-Victorian aesthetic, and he has out done himself with what I present for your pleasure today…

Chad VanGaalen: “TMNT Mask” / “Molten Light”

SOFT AIRPLANE

Chad VanGaalen: SOFT AIRPLANE

Via i guess i’m floating ::

Chad VanGaalen: “TMNT Mask” / “Molten Light”

” Just when you think you have college all figured out it knocks you on your ass again. No worries though, scheduling conflicts fixed and senioritis staved off with LSAT books it’s back to the grind. Those daily grinds aren’t any fun, Brett Favre hated it so much that he retired but he’s as indecisive as my mate Dave. If there is one thing I do have figured out it’s Chad VanGaalen – this Canadian one-man-band can seems to do no musical wrong to my ears and I’d recommend his music to even the most weary music lover.

Indeed, ever since his debut album Infiniheart knocked my socks off it’s been a greenlight for good tunes. Exactly one year after the debut came the grand sophomore LP Skelliconnection, sonically taking the socks from my feet and forcing me to dance around the room like Fred Astaire before throwing them in a heap on the floor. Lucky for me, I was barefoot when listening to VanGaalen’s third album Soft Airplane, but it’s just as contagious and enjoyable.

VanGaalen has become an expert at home recording over the past few LPs, his latest album having been recorded on an old tape machine and JVC ghetto blaster in his Calgary basement. He blends guitar, synth, glitchy pop, and handmade instruments with stronger songwriting and creative lyricism. Soft Airplane, out Sept. 9th on Sub Pop, is a great record from start to finish and you can get an early sample taste from two of the tracks I’ve fallen for. “TMNT Mask” is a terrific electronic track complete with a serene harmonica breakdown while “Molten Light” will appeal for its intimate feel and progressive lyrics. Check ‘em both out and prepare for a doozy of a Chad CD next week.”

ROUND - UP

ROUND - UP

–>> ..k’ kinda a headachy round-up but well..::

Danny B & his official TMNT site :: ” Brian sent in this info that some of you might be interested in now that Christmas is a scant two months away – perhaps your local Target might have some old items out, too:

“I wanted to send some pics along of the Turtle ornaments that I found at a very sporadic Target store a couple of days ago. Each year i go to the big chain stores and scan the Christmas stuff to see if my dreams would be fulfilled and Turtle stuff would present itself. The only times that has happened was with the Leonardo Hallmark ornament and the Wind up walking Turtles. I actually squealed in the aisle when i found these unexpected ornaments, scaring the kids that were looking next to me at other lesser iconic ornaments, made them think twice about passing up ALL four turtle ornaments! Thought i would share.”

Devin sent in the following press release from Playmates Toys:

COSTA MESA, CA –It’s a shell-ebration! Everyone’s favorite lean, green, TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES celebrate the 25th anniversary of their comic book debut in 2009 by incorporating totally radical new retro segments to the merchandising mix and innovative new themed products both supported with in-pack promotions including video games, pilot episodes of animation and other interactive content and entertainment. Action figures based on the new TV show airing on Fox and the CW, and a new segment of the popular Mini-Mutant line including figures and vehicles will be the lines’ foundation. On the retro front, Playmates is re-introducing the original awesome 1987 action figure line, twelve figures in all, including the four Turtles, Splinter, Shredder and more. TMNT figure distribuion issues in the U. K.  ..

** Via Hero in the U.K.   ( Thanks, K ) .. :: ” .. On my continued quest to scalp every Buzzrock and Multiflex I can find (as well as the Sub Sewer baddies) I have seen TMNT completely dwindle and dissapear from the shelves from the various Woolworths I check.

Not only Woolworths but I’ve checked ASDA, Toys R Us, Tesco and The Entertainer and found nothing but a Hypershell on the bottom shelf and the odd Cowabunga Carl van here and there.

A mate of mine in Scotland says the TRU he works at can’t shift the hundreds of Cowabunga Carl vans in the warehouse.

This is really sad. Obviously the UK is much smaller beans than the states and it looks like things with the current figure problems caused by Playmates have hit worse here. Even two exclusive figures did not seem to mount to much…

..
Contacted Vivid Imaginations (who deals with Playmates enquiries in the UK) in regards to releasing the later range of Mini Mutants, the Sub Sewer range and Back To The Sewer. Their response was:

Hi

Thank you for your email. We have no plans in the near future for extending the range of these toys, however Vivid Imaginations are continuously reviewing the product range. Please contact us at a later date for any further information.
Regards

..

UPDATE: http://www.vividimaginations.co.uk/pages/products.php
TMNT has been dropped as a product. Not a good sign this end.
